In the countries of South America where coca tea is completely legal, it is possible to find it in supermarkets and mom and pop shops in major cities and regional towns. Coca tea leaves are legal to purchase in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. However, outside of South America, coca tea and coca tea leaves are considered restricted imports.
It is not just coca tea bags and coca leaves that are restricted by Customs law. Any product made using the whole leaf is similarly restricted. Examples of these products are coca chewing gum, baked goods, coca candies, and beverages such as soft drink made with coca extracts, and coca wine.
That’s the official line anyway. Indeed, US Customs and Border Protection will most definitely seize any package that they detect containing coca.
Many people have found out the hard way. Of course, Peru is a popular travel destination, and many people come back from Peru with incredible tales of the culture and ancient ruins. They also come back very excited at having discovered coca tea. Naturally, and quite innocently, they may try to order some more of this newfound joy from a website in Peru, only to get hit with a Customs seizure upon arrival to the United States.
Some proportion of packages do get through, and though it is impossible to know for sure, the seizure rate may be as high as 60% or more. It’s a gamble at the best of times.
Once the coca tea gets into the country, however, there is nothing stopping you from enjoying the invigorating and uplifting experience that coca tea and coca leaves provide.
